As a fan of Assassin’s Creed, even if it is just the first game, Rebellion has me intrigued. The mobile spin-off from the popular series was originally released on Android and iOS last year but was only available in select regions until recently when Ubisoft decided to bring it worldwide.
I got my hands on the English version and have been playing it non-stop for the past few days, and I’m here to tell you what makes this AC game worth a shot. So, without further ado, let us get on with our list of some of the amazing features of the Assassin’s Creed Rebellion Game.
Different Characters
The first thing that you realize when you start playing Rebellion is that this is not one of those high-quality console games, and it doesn’t try to be one either. The game has much lower production value than you would expect from a full-fledged AC title, but it compensates by allowing players to play as characters from the Assassin’s Creed lore.
You can choose between five characters (only four at launch), each with their own unique abilities and utilizing two different combat styles (Rogue and Knight). I went with Aguilar de Nerha because of his speed and deadly hidden blade attacks.
The second best part about being an existing character is that Ubisoft didn’t waste time on creating new stories or maps for him/her, which means that you are not forced to play through boring side quests to unlock new skills or locations. All of the items that I have unlocked so far are part of Aguilar’s story.
Interesting Storyline
As I mentioned before, Ubisoft didn’t need to create any new material for Rebellion, so it drew from other Assassin’s Creed titles, namely Brotherhood and Revelations. If you have played those two games, then you will be familiar with the main characters, Ezio Auditor and Altair Ibn-La’Ahad.
Without spoiling much, I can say that the story takes place after Origins, but before Odyssey. You do get to meet other familiar faces, and the ending (which I unlocked after a few hours) is quite interesting.
No real penalty for dying
Unlike many games, where you die and have to respawn at specific checkpoints or maybe lose some money/HP, Rebellion does not punish players for dying multiple times during combat encounters. In fact, your hero will get back up immediately after each death and continue fighting.
The only thing that I haven’t figured out yet is whether or not there are consequences inflicted on you if your entire party dies in battles. According to my buddies at Game Skinny, there aren’t any penalties right now, but we can’t be too sure about that as we haven’t played far enough into the game to find out.
Great combat
Since this is not a story-driven game, you can’t really expect deep and engaging storytelling, or at least I didn’t. What you do get are good visuals, fun gameplay mechanics, and several hours of entertainment. Much like other AC games, Rebellion revolves around assassinations but instead requires the protagonist (s) to kill Templars that are trying to take over his/her country.
You can approach each battle with stealth by avoiding direct fights altogether or go all berserk on your enemies with knives, swords, heavy weapons, etc., which will be much more difficult than using invisibility skills because there are always backup forces nearby who can jump in if they spot a gang member being slaughtered.
A mix of puzzle-solving and stealth
While you do have to kill scores of enemies in Rebellion, there are some missions that will require you to avoid confrontations altogether by using your wits instead of your weapons. I won’t go into too much detail as it would ruin the fun, but let’s just say that the game put me through my paces with several puzzles and riddles.
Not to mention, several floors were occupied by Templars who were not above shooting at random passers-by for no reason whatsoever (at least none that I could see or hear), so having invisibility abilities like sense was critical during some missions.
Deep Lore
Since there are no real NPCs in Assassin’s Creed Rebellion, what you do get instead is a complete encyclopedia of names, places, and history that will be accessible from the menu screen at any time. I was blown away by how much data Ubisoft managed to fit into such a small space that delves into the world of AC lore.
Believe it or not, I actually found myself reading through pages and pages of text trying to understand more about Spanish society during those times and other events mentioned throughout the game. My best advice: grab some coffee and buckle up for one hell of a journey!
Own brotherhood
Similar to the plot, there is no glorious story in Rebellion about you recruiting new Assassins and developing them into powerful warriors. You will be required to do all of that yourself while playing the game.
Considering that players don’t have to complete any quests or missions, it would make sense for them to level up their characters through other means, like upgrading equipment, etc. Every time a member of my party completed a mission successfully, I was rewarded with XP, but other than that, I had to explore houses, caves, fields, etc.,
Killing enemies along the way who were also worth some level-up points. As soon as I gained enough experience, I upgraded my main character’s stats, which affected his performance during battles against other Assassins.
Decent Graphics
I know I’m always talking about visuals when it comes to mobile games, but let’s face it; most of them are simple ports of console games that the developers tried to re-create for our smartphones and tablets.
It seems like Ubisoft made a real effort to give us an authentic Assassin’s Creed experience with their latest release, featuring very nice-looking character models and detailed backgrounds without suffering too much slowdown, even when there were dozens of enemies onscreen at any given time.
For me, this was quite an achievement because my phone isn’t exactly the newest or fastest one out there, so well done to whoever managed to port such a graphically demanding game into our hands!
The game is huge
Ubisoft has done an excellent job of creating a rich and engaging world for its new AC release. Assassin’s Creed Rebellion offers 100+ story missions, as well as 50+ side quests to complete on top of the open-world gameplay, which means you’ll easily be able to sink dozens of hours into this one without getting bored.
Just like most other mobile games released these days, Rebellion follows the F2P model by allowing players to spend real money in order to gain access to everything faster, but I was still able to enjoy all the features within my first week of playing, even though I hadn’t spent a single dollar on it.
For me, this proves that there’s more than enough here for everyone, but if your inner completionist wants to max out everything as soon as possible, then you should probably consider investing a few bucks.
